OUR REHOMING GUIDE
Over the years, Woodfield Animal Sanctuary has saved hundreds of horses and ponies who were in situations where, had we not stepped in, many would have sadly faced destruction or death.
The majority of the horses and ponies that arrive in our care have never been touched by a human hand. As a result, rehabilitation is almost always required. Time, patience, and understanding are essential to help these animals feel safe and to begin rebuilding trust after years — and in some cases generations — of neglect or poor treatment.
For some of our rescued equines, Woodfield becomes their forever home. This is often due to ongoing medical needs, or because they have been failed by humans to such an extent that the outside world is simply too overwhelming for them. These horses and ponies remain with us as permanent residents, where they will be cared for and protected for the rest of their lives.
Others that come into our care are able to rehabilitate and still have a bright future ahead of them. For these equines, we are able to offer them for adoption. Adoption at Woodfield is a loan-based system — the equine remains in our ownership at all times and is never sold.
Before any adoption takes place, a home check is carried out to ensure the highest standards of care. Only once this is successfully passed can an equine be offered for adoption, and a contract must be signed.
Whether an equine can be ridden is decided on an individual basis and must be agreed with Woodfield in advance. If riding is permitted, this is clearly documented within the contract and strict conditions apply to ensure the horse or pony is never overworked or placed under undue pressure. If riding is not agreed, the equine must not be ridden under any circumstances.
In most cases, the adopter is responsible for day-to-day care, farriery, and routine veterinary costs. However, in certain circumstances, Woodfield may offer additional support, including assistance with veterinary treatment or bills. Any such support is agreed in advance and clearly outlined within the adoption agreement. Emergency situations must always be communicated to Woodfield as soon as possible.
The adoption contract ensures that:
- The equine can never be sold, given away, bred from, or sub-rehomed
- Woodfield retains the right to inspect and access the equine
- If an adopter’s circumstances change, the equine will return to Woodfield
- If standards of care are not met, Woodfield reserves the right to remove the equine immediately
This system ensures that every horse and pony rescued by Woodfield is protected — not just today, but for life.
